The owners of the Cane Island Power Park filed a site certification
application Tuesday with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to
begin the licensing and permitting process for a natural gas-fueled power
generator known as Cane Island Unit 4.
Kissimmee Utility Authority and the Florida Municipal Power Agency are
co-owners of Cane Island Power Park.
Cane Island Unit 4 will be one of the cleanest and most
efficient plants in Florida, officials said.
It would be capable of generating enough electricity to serve about 60,000
homes.
As part of efforts to educate the public about the plant, the power companies
plan a community picnic and open house Saturday. The event will include a free
buffet and entertainment from noon to 2 p.m. at the Intercession City Civic Center, 1531 Immokalee St.
